How Turkcell Improved Log Monitoring Efficiency by 32x

turkcell log management virtualmetric

As a leading Telecommunications company, Turkcell needed a scalable solution to monitor their expanding IT environment. Faced with high costs and limitations of their existing log monitoring system, they struggled to efficiently manage their growing data needs — until they found VirtualMetric. Learn how Turkcell improved their log monitoring efficiency 32-fold, and now able to processes 2TB daily logs on just 2 servers.

The challenge

Turkcell, the leading mobile phone operator with 38 million subscribers globally as of 2023, is a significant player in the telecommuncations industry, ranking on the Fortune 2000 list. To manage its expansive network, Turkcell needed a scalable and efficient solution to monitor their IT infrastructure.

Turkcell had been using Splunk, an established monitoring tool, to oversee 52 critical applications. However, they encounter several challenges:

  • High costs: Scaling with their existing solution would have been prohibitively expensive.
  • Scalability Issues: The current setup was reaching its limits, making it increasingly difficult to expand log monitoring without incurring significant costs.
  • High hardware requirements: Managing the growing volume of log data required multiple servers, leading to increased operational costs and complicating efforts to scale efficiently.

Our Solution – Scalable Log Monitoring

Here’s how VirtualMetric addressed these challenges for Turkcell:

  1. Efficient Resource Utilization: VirtualMetric optimized the log collection process and implemented a more efficient data handling architecture. This allowed Turkcell to reduce their hardware needs from eight servers to just two physical servers, supported by ten virtual machines. This redesign significantly lowered hardware and operational costs while efficiently accommodating the increased data volume.
  2. Advanced Data Compression: To further enhance efficiency, VirtualMetric implemented advanced data compression techniques, achieving an impressive 98% data compression rate. This allowed Turkcell to manage large volumes of log data more effectively and with fewer resources.
  3. Successful Transition and Integration: Replacing an established system like Splunk was a complex task, but VirtualMetric was integrated into Turkcell’s existing IT infrastructure smoothly, without losing any functionality. This ensured continuity and minimized disruption during the transition.

By implementing VirtualMetric’s scalable log monitoring solution, Turkcell not only addressed the immediate crisis but also laid a foundation for the future of their monitoring systems, unifying multiple tools under one comprehensive solution.

“Through mutual respect, dedication, and a willingness to adapt and innovate, they successfully transformed a looming crisis into an opportunity for growth and innovation.“

The Results

Implementing VirtualMetric’s solution led to significant improvements in Turkcell’s log monitoring capabilities:

  • 32 Times More Efficient: Turkcell now processes 8 times more data—growing from 250GB to 2TB of daily log data—while using only a quarter of the original hardware, making the system 32 times more efficient.
  • Cost and Resource Savings: The reduction from eight servers to just two, combined with a 98% data compression rate, resulted in substantial savings on licensing, hardware, and operational costs.
  • Enhanced Scalability: Turkcell can now monitor more applications without the steep costs previously associated with scaling, ensuring their infrastructure is prepared for future growth.
  • Sustainability Gains: The reduction in server usage also translated into a 162,936Mg CO2 reduction annually — a significant win for our planet.
